Precision Wire EDM Built for Die Components and Production Parts

Wire EDM is the process of choice when conventional milling cannot reach the geometry your program requires. Internal corners approaching sharp, complex profiles in fully hardened tool steel, tapered features requiring 5-axis simultaneous motion, and tight-tolerance die details that must be cut after heat treat rather than before. These are the jobs wire EDM cutting handles cleanly, without distortion, without heat-affected zones, and without the dimensional drift that comes from cutting pressure on hardened materials.

Cameron Tool runs three Charmilles wire EDM machines including two 5-axis CNC systems with Fanuc control. Our largest machine, the Robofil 510, handles workpieces up to 47.2" x 27.6" x 15.75" with a maximum table load of 4,400 lbs. For large die components that exceed the capacity of most regional wire EDM services, the 510 handles them without sending work to a second vendor.

Wire EDM machining services at Cameron Tool do not operate as a standalone department. Our wire EDM machines sit inside the same facility as our die construction floor, CNC machining department, and tryout presses. A die component can go from CNC roughing to wire EDM cutting to CMM inspection to die assembly without leaving the building.

OUR EDM EQUIPMENT

Charmilles Robofil 510 (5-Axis) 5-axis CNC wire EDM with Fanuc control. Maximum workpiece 47.2" x 27.6" x 15.75". Maximum table load 4,400 lbs. Table travel X 27.5", Y 15.75", Z 15.75" with U/V travel of 27.6" at Z 15.7". Built for large die components and complex tapered profiles that smaller wire EDM machines cannot handle.

Charmilles Robofil 440SL (5-Axis) 5-axis CNC wire EDM with Fanuc control. Maximum workpiece 21.65" x 13.77" x 15.75". Maximum table load 3,400 lbs. Handles mid-size die components, punches, inserts, and precision details requiring 5-axis simultaneous motion for tapered or complex geometry.

Charmilles Robofil 310 (4-Axis) 4-axis CNC wire EDM with Fanuc 16-WA control. X-axis 11.75", Y-axis 7.75", Z-axis 15.75". 45-degree taper capability. Handles smaller die details, punch plates, and precision profiles where tight tolerances and a fine surface finish are required.

Materials and Applications Wire EDM cutting is suitable for any electrically conductive material, including hardened tool steel, carbide, titanium, aluminum, brass, copper, stainless steel, and advanced high-strength alloys. Common applications include die components and punch plates cut after heat treatment, extrusion dies, form blocks, stripper plates, complex internal profiles, and aerospace and medical precision components requiring fine surface finish alongside tight geometry.

Integrated with Die Construction and Machining Cameron Tool's wire EDM machining services operate inside the same building as our die construction floor, CNC machining department, and CMM inspection lab. Die components move from CNC roughing to wire EDM cutting to inspection and die assembly without leaving the facility. One purchase order, one contact, no coordination between separate vendors on precision die details.

WHAT WE CUT

Cameron Tool's wire EDM department handles precision cutting work for die construction programs, production machining customers, and standalone wire EDM jobs. Die components including punch plates, form blocks, trim steels, and stripper plates cut from hardened tool steel after heat treat. Complex internal profiles with internal corners that milling cannot reach. Tapered and 5-axis geometry requiring simultaneous multi-axis motion. Large-format die sections that exceed the capacity of most regional wire EDM services.

Wire EDM cuts by erosion rather than mechanical force. There is no cutting pressure, no heat-affected zone, and no tool deflection. The result is dimensional accuracy on hardened materials that conventional milling and grinding cannot match. For die components that must hold final geometry after heat treat without distortion, wire EDM machining is the correct process and Cameron Tool has the machines and experience to run it correctly.

For customers who need both wire EDM cutting and downstream die assembly, machining, or press tryout, Cameron Tool handles the full program in-house. Fewer vendors. Faster lead time. Complete accountability from wire cut through first part off.
